Our gîtes are situated in the South
Vendée villages of Le Langon (Les Roches & Les Alouettes) and
Mouzeuil St Martin (Les Chardonnerets & La Maison du Blé).
These villages are located some 4km
apart, approximately midway between the pretty market towns of Luçon
and Fontenay le Comte.
The villages themselves are long established.
Le
Langon dates from Roman times when it was an important port, a
thousand years before Dutch engineers pushed the sea back and
reclaimed the land for the powerful local monasteries. Significant
archaeological discoveries have been made in the village and many of
these are displayed in the museum at Fontenay.
Despite their peaceful, rural, character, both Le Langon and
Mouzeuil are very much living villages, with schools, excellent
bakeries, café / bars and a selection of local shops. Nearby
Fontenay and Luçon have a fine range of restaurants and host weekly
markets.
"Le
Langon is a typically sleepy French village in a beautiful and peaceful
area, a perfect place for a perfect holiday"
The villages and their near neighbours hold a range of events during
the summer months including an outdoor music festival (Le Langon,
July), fireworks on July 14th (Bastille Day), a carriage
driving competition (Le Langon, August), the extraordinary Melon Fair
(Chaillé les Marais, August) and an agricultural fair (L’Hermenault,
September).
Facilities in the village include a Tennis club with indoor and
outdoor court, available for our guests to hire out for a minimal fee.
The countryside around the
villages is gentle, with plenty of quiet walks to be had.
Particularly pleasant is the marais, the reclaimed lands boarding
the villages. Here one can wander on foot or by bike often
seeing no traffic and few - if any - other people.
